Hi,
Queen:- red/brown, ergatoid(wingless)
Workers:- reddish brown
In this species, groups of workers lay unfertilized eggs. These eggs
are diploid and contain 32 chromosomes, as opposed to haploid with 16
chromosomes that become males. These 32 chromosomes split at some stage
into 2 sets of 16, allowing the egg to grow into a clone of the worker
that laid it.
The colony reproduction cycle in this species is much like that of army ants.
The workers all lay eggs at the same time, during this time the colony
just guards the nest without foraging. At some point the last
generation of pupae eclose. About the same time the eggs all hatch,
prompting a mass foraging period. Once all the larvae have passed
through 3 instars they pupate and the colony once again enters a low
activity stage, just caring for the pupae. Before the pupae eclose the
lay eggs all at once again, starting the cycle over.
Was genau bedeutet ergatoid?
